Bass Fishing Reports
Current lake level is 162.59 .. Conservation Pool Level is 164.4 msl

If you are a bass fisherman, now is definitely the time to wet a hook on Sam Rayburn.  In recent days a number of fishing patterns have been effective and here are a few of the best.

If you like to fish lipless crankbaits, like a Rat-L-Trap, this is the time of the year you will love.  The "Trap" bite has been on and the colors doing the most damage have been bleeding-craw, bleeding-shad, chartreuse-craw, chartreuse-gold and bream.  Fish these baits in 6-to 10 feet of water over areas that have hydrilla.  Other very productive baits will be the Wiggle Wart, Rapala DT and the Bandit series.

The key to using any crankbait on Rayburn is to select a model that will "tick" the grass as it is being retrieved.  Occasionally you will hang up, but just give the bait a sharp snap with the rod and it should pop free.  Be ready the moment your bait pops free because this is actually when a number of your strikes will occur.  With the lake level on a slow rise there will be lots of newly flooded brush and grass.  This will make the fishing just continue to get better and better.

At times the wind can be a real nuisance, but it sure hasn't stopped the big bass from hitting.  Just keep in mind that wind and wave action can create pretty good fishing conditions.  Baitfish congregate in these windy areas, and that attracts the bass.  Use the  wind to your advantage, but always be safe.  Getting a cold wave over the front of the boat (and drenching you) can sure make for an unpleasant day of fishing.

Spinnerbaits will get red-hot in the upcoming weeks as bass move around in the rising water.  Work the inside grass-line with colors such as fire-tiger, white, chartreuse/white and fire-cracker.  I am especially fond of the Texan Lure, Lil' Hustler and Strike King tandem baits that have a gold willow-leaf and small nickel Colorado blade.  This combination really attracts big fish.

If soft plastics are your cup of tea you can pretty much depend on three good patterns working.  The first pattern is to use a Carolina-rigged lizard (watermelon or red shad with a 3-foot leader) in deeper drop-off areas next to creek channels.  This is a great pattern for this time of the year since cold fronts have a tendency to roar in, moving the fish from shallow water back to the deeper areas.  Work the bait in from 17- to 22 feet of water.

The second pattern I love to use is a Texas-rig worm or jig-n-lizard fished in 8-to 10 feet of water along outside grass-lines.  Work the bait slow, and be ready because some of the strikes may be awesome.  Good colors for the Texas-rig will be watermelon-red, black neon and black-blue.  For the jig-n-lizard, use black, brown or solid white.  Match the trailer to the jig color.

The third pattern will be using a small Waveworm, Senko or tube bait  with a bb-type weight attached about a foot or so up the line (like a miniature Carolina-rig) in shallow water spawning areas.  This set-up can be a dynamite technique.  Use white or other bright colors so you can keep track of exactly where the bait is at all times.  Better have some heavy line spooled on your reel because you may hook up with a real wall-hanger.

As the water continues to warm you will see improved wacky worm fishing.  Good colors will be pumpkin, junebug and those really “hot” colors such as bubble-gum and orange.

Here is my suggestion for when you catch that big fish … Take some quick pictures and measurements of the bass and then put it back into the water to complete the spawn.  Then you can have a fiberglass replica made for hanging on the wall to relive great memories of the trip.  Who knows, in the future you may have an opportunity to catch the bass again and by that time it could be a lake record.

See you on the water – Jim Binns

Bass Fishing Reports
Friends and Fellow Anglers, Runoff is winding down on most area streams and fishing this summer should be better than the past few drought plagued seasons. The Stonefly Hatch is in progress on the Cimarron and fishing has been excellent on the lower reaches of the river as they haven't been releasing a significant amount of water from the dam. The Cimarroncita has been especially good with # 12 Stimulators. We have been fishing on the Costilla also and it looks like the fish are in good shape there also. We have a new piece of private water on the lower river near Amalia. Ed Adams New Mexico Fly Fishing GuideThe Valle Vidal opens on July 1st and there is plenty of water in the resevoir this year so flows should be decent. The Red and the Embudo are still running high but are clearing and should be great by late June. The Conejos probably won't be fishing till late June as they usually have a more intense, long lasting runoff (Its running 1300cfs on the lower river now). We have access thru Conejos River Anglers to a couple of private leases including the Hamilton Lease on the upper river and a new one down by Broyles Bridge. Culebra Creek is starting to clear and Rita had a good day up there yesterday with a couple of guys from Amarillo.

In August we are having a series of fly fishing camps on the Cimarroncita Ranch that will include expert instruction in all levels of fly fishing, lodging and access to the "Dream Water" on the Cita. Myself, Rita and Doc Thompson will be the instructors/guides. For details visit the Cita's website at cimrroncita.com

Looks like a banner year in the Sangre de Christos
Hope to see you soon Ed & Rita Adams

Fishing Report This is not really a report but rather somewhat of a Thank You and Good Bye! After 8 1/2 years of guiding full time on Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend, I have decided to call it quits and pursue a different career. Many of you have not only followed my guiding and tournament career from the time I graduated college but also up through getting married and having a baby. I want to thank all of you who booked trips and fished or hunted with me, those of you who sent the nice emails thanking me for the fishing reports, plus those of you who just came up to me to say thanks or hello. I want all of you to know how much I appreciated all the kind words and thoughts. I also want to say thank you to all the sponsors that I have had through these past several years, I couldn't have done it without you. I had the opportunity to meet a lot of great people both through guiding and tournament fishing. God blessed me with many fanastic sunrises, lots of fish and ducks and a wonderfull family. I want to Thank the Lord for being able to make a living doing what I have done, and I want to thank my entire family for supporting me all these year. Thank you to everyone! Now just to let you know, I am not leaving or going anywhere. I am now selling real estate full time for Rayburn Realty just around the corner from the Stump restaurant. If you are looking to buy any property in the lakes area or wanting to sell some, please keep my in mind. You can reach me at the office at 1(800)310-2109. You may see me pop up in a few team tournaments from time to time or duck hunting for fun on the lake. You may even see me post a fishing report every now and then too. Now since this is a fishing report site, I wanted to include a few words about some products that became some of the more important tools in my fishing. These are products that if you do not currently use them, are worth looking into. One of the most recent product lines that I have had the opportunity to work with is Lucky Craft. Their baits are absolutely the best hard baits I have ever come in contact with. They do cost more than many other baits but thier ability to produce will quickly justify the cost. Many of you have probably noticed how often I talk about the Lucky Craft Flat series of crankbaits. The Flat CB MR and Flat CB DR are the best crankbaits I have used. I throw mostly Ghostminnow and American Shad, but there are some great spring time colors and they have just come out with a load of new colors that are sure to be hot. The new LVR-7 and LVR-10 will make you throw away your rat-l-traps, they are awesome. The Pointer 78 jerkbait has won me more money than any other hard bait. From Florida to Texas to Detroit this bait will catch fish when all else fails. The Gunfish95 topwater bait was one of my deadliest baits this year, especially since almost no one was throwing it. This is a must own topwater bait, I use the American Shad color most of the time. Baby Chugbug, My # 1 topwater bait on Rayburn and Toledo since they hit the market. Chrome/blue is the only color I used but I now own a bunch of bone one because the fish ate the chrome off. Stanley Wedge Spinnerbaits (titanium included). The baby wedge was a huge tournament favorite especially on lakes out side of Rayburn and Toledo. Take this spinnerbait and replace the back willow with a gold #4 wedge blade, it is a fish catching machine. White/chart or catawba 1/4oz and 3/8oz Stanley wedge spinnerbaits in the bushes and over the grass did the trick when the blade bite was on. I will take a Stanley Wedge Spinnerbait over any other spinnerbait on the market. (I also hate that they are discontinuing their buzzbait, it was my favorite also) GYCB Senko - fakes just dont cut it. Greenpumpkin/watermelon laminate was my top color choice. Gambler Swebo worms in Greenpumpkin, sourgrape, junebug and redbug are by far the best wacky worm on the market. I promise you will catch more fish on them and not loose as many compared to any other straight tailed worm. Baby brush hog on a carolina rig. Green pumpkin with the tail died chart. Its a killer. Bass Assasins in Arkansas shiner and super flukes in smokin shad, big producers especially on the Bend. Fishing line called "T Line" sold at Tri Lakes Tackle, Awesome fishing line. (monofilament) I used #14 and #17 for most of my baitcasting setups. Power Pro 65# moss green on all my flipping and pitching rods. Grass, bushes, stumps, docks, it did not matter. That stuff rocks. Shimano Reels- simply the best Castaway Rods, great rod and I am still using ones that I bought over 10yrs ago. Fished over 200 days a year and abused the entire time and they are still going. Lowrance X-15. My baby on board. A big thanks to Terry's Marine in Nacogdoches for all their support over the years and to Jasper Outboards for getting me out of some tight jams in a hurry. Some of the stuff listed above where sponsors and many where not, but I used all of them on a regular basis. My former clients can verify that. I will also be selling a series of 4 maps sold as a package. These maps will cover spring, summer, fall, and winter. They will be marked in detail and will include GPS cordinates as well as written instuction on how to fish spots, when to fish them, and what baits to use on them. I am going to limit the the selling of these maps to 20 packages. I will sell the 4 map series for $300. These maps will show all my best guide and tournament producing spots. They can easily pay for themselves in one tournament year. email me at allman@jas.net or call me if your interested in buying a package. After the 20th package is gone, that will be it. Thanks again and God Bless everyone, have a Merry Christmas. Shane Allman Fish and Fowl Guide Service

Fishing Report The fishing was a little slower today for some reason. It may be that the east winds showed back up but I am not sure. Wacky worms in sourgrape continue to be pretty steady. You can fish most any cove right now and catch fish going down the bank with a wacky worm, there does not even have to be any grass in the cove at all. You will catch a lot of short fish but you can still catch a limit pretty easy if you stick with it. Grass and wood seems to help increase your chances for bigger fish but like I said, you can still catch some nice fish in slick bottom coves. Dont be afraid to cast to the bank and throw back in areas that is to shallow for the boat. We also caught some keepers today on a horny toad and Stanley wedgetail shad. The wedgetail shad is definately worth picking up and trying if you have not already. Also rig it with the 4/0 mustad hook that has the nose insert and weight on the hook shank. This will allow you to throw it farther and make it run true. I have been waking the bait under the surface around pads, pepper grass and hydrilla. We also caught some fish on carolina rigs, LC CB MR (lucky craft crankbait) in ghostminnow, baby chugbug and spinnerbait. All of our fish came in 4ft or less even though we did fish a few deeper spots real quick. I do have some opening the last 2 weeks of this month if you would like to book a trip for bass or crappie (and/or both). Good luck and be safe.

Fishing Report Fishing is ranging from fair to great depending on if you make the right choices at the right time. Anglers are catching fish from one end of the lake to the other in 1ft to 30ft of water. My clients and I have been fishing mostly shallow to catch our fish but the are some good reports of deep fish being caught. I have stayed in 1 - 13ft fishing everything from hydrilla, pepper grass, coontail, timber and brush piles. We have been catching our fish on Lucky Craft Gunfish 95s, baby chugbugs, buzzbaits, Senkos (watermelon red), TX rigged (yamamoto 8" single tail grub redbug) worms, carolina rigs (watermelon gold Yamamoto Kuttail or Kreature), Lucky Craft CB DR, CB SR, and CB 12 all in either American shad or ghost minnow. I am throwing the deeper crankbaits around wood in 8 -13ft. I have been throwing the rigs in the same areas. Everything else is around shallow vegetation. Something I wanted to share with everyone that I my friend Jim Alphin over at the Yamamoto shop at Toled Bend just introduced me to. It is called an Easy Retriever, and is a lure retriever. You can stick this thing in your pocket and when you hang up your crankbait or any bait, pull it out, quickly slide it on your line and let it go. It slides down your line and knocks your bait loose. This is the easiest lure retriever I have ever seen. It will save you a ton of money. I do not know what shops carry them around the lakes area but I do know that the Yamamoto shop has them. BASS anglers start their official practice days tomorrow and will weigh in at Twin Dikes on Thurs, Fri. and Sat. Look for some really good sacks to come in and to hear several different patterns. I want to wish good luck to all our local guys especially the second best guide on the lake :) Jeff Buchanan. I have some open days available this coming week if you care to book a trip for either bass or crappie. I have a few days during the last week of the month and several in October. I will also be running a lot more fishing trips this winter and fewer duck trips. Look for some winter specials starting in November.
